New kitchen cabinet pulls are too loose how can I tighten them up?

Jasmyn asked:

I bought new pulls for my old kitchen cabinet doors. The machine screws don’t screw in all the way into the new pulls, because the cabinet doors are not thick enough.

Can I put washers behind the pulls and again behind the back of the cabinet door to tighten up the loose pulls and make up for the thin cabinet door? I need to make up about 1/8 of an inch difference.

Thanks from a damsel in distress.

Painting Kitchen Cabinet - Remodel, Reface or Paint your Kitchen Cabinets?

Arturo asked:

You kitchen cabinets take everything from grimy hands to cooking grease to messy spills. They really take a beating. If your kitchen cabinets need eventual remodeling, but you are short on money right now, painting kitchen cabinet may be a cheap and easy solution.

You will spend far less than you would for replacement or even refacing. And, if you plan on painting kitchen cabinet yourself, you can expect to save even more money. For even the cheapest cabinets for a 10X12 foot kitchen can easily run over $5000 and this doesnt include the cost of putting them in or new countertops. You may find that your new cabinets dont have the same high quality as your old cabinets either.

Even refacing, which is the process of veneering your existing cabinet boxes, and replacing old drawers and doors can cost about $3500. When you decide to on painting kitchen cabinet, the cost of materials like brushes, primer and paint will cost you a low price of about $200. If you have a professional do the job of painting kitchen cabinet, expect to pay about $1000 more.

But, even painting kitchen cabinet cant help if you have a poor kitchen design or any fundamental structure flaws. When you have cheap cabinets, they grow old and feeble just like people with age. When you have thin sides and backs, they are often veneered with vinyl paper and they can peel. An undersized particleboard cabinet bottom or the shelf can sometimes sag or even break. Rails that hang, especially on the upper cabinets, can begin to come loose as well.

You can replace doors and drawers easily, but if you have structural problems, then the cabinets are not a good bet for refinishing or much of anything else. You are better off just replacing them. But, if the damage is only limited to worn surfaces, nicks and cuts and little dings, a new coat of paint can work miracles on those old cabinets. When you decide that painting kitchen cabinet is the way to go for you, dont forget to replace your old kitchen hardware with some new, so that the kitchen will have a bright and fresh look all over.

How to remove foul odor from kitchen cabinet?

Landma asked:

I purchased a 12 year old home with custom pine kitchen cabinets in which one set has an unpleasant odor. The surrounding cabinets aren’t as bad. I was told the foul odor in the cabinets was due to the home being closed up and there was no central air. I installed central air, leave the cabinet doors open cleaned the cabinets with bleach and set baking soda on the shelves. Still, two months later, the smell remains.

Why does my kitchen cabinet beneath the sink smell?

Regularguy asked:

The cabinet beneath my kitchen sink and disposal smells like rotting food, but I can’t pinpoint the source of the smell. Oddly, the disposal itself does NOT smell — I stick my nose down the drain and it smells OK. But if I open the cabinet doors and kneel down, the smell of rotting food is strong… but I’ve cleaned everything out of the cabinet. I have put ice cubes, lots of citrus peel and baking soda down the disposal to clear any smell, but again, the source appears beneath the sink and not the disposal from the top side. (House is 10 years old; disposal is 3 years old.) There are no visible leaks beneath the cabinet. Two hints:1) While the disposal from the top doesn’t smell; the pipe beneath the sink does; and 2) the smell is strongest when I run the dishwasher, but it comes and goes all the time. Any thoughts on what could be causing the smell or ideas to fix?

What is the best way to repair the inside of my kitchen cabinet?

pookiepoo asked:

I have two kitchen cabinets. One is under the counter top and the other under the sink. Both have floors made of some type of wood that has gone bad over the years, it was there when I moved in. They look like they got wet and feel damp sometimes. The parts that are dry feel velvety and when I use my duster I can brush some of it off. I don’t know what this kind of damage is called. I just want to repair it and changing all the cabinets would not be worth it. We rent and we will be moving soon.

We want to repair them in a way that can isolate the whole cabinet under the sink and counter top as if we had installed new cabinets.

I hope I have been clear, not sure how to explain it better.

Thanks

Where can I find affordable white kitchen cabinet replacement doors?

Can’t have sugar without UGA asked:

This house was not really taken care of by the previous owners and the white paint has chipped off the majority of the doors and the wood has swollen underneath. The frames are fine, but the doors need to be replaced badly. I have looked on Lowe’s and Home Depot’s website and I simply cannot afford to replace the entire cabinet and they do not sell the doors alone. I have searched the internet and cannot find anything resembling what I have. Everything I have found is “real wood”, which is more expensive of course. I just need the contractor grade, white, particle board kitchen cabinet replacement doors! HELP!
