Kitchen cabinet recommendations?

March 27, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 6 Comments →

BJ L asked:

I am going to remodel my kitchen, including replacing my cabinets. I don’t need anything fancy, but do want to be able to access the wasted space in the corners where I can’t even reach now, with my current cabinets. That’s why I’m not considering refacing. I don’t want to buy junk, but I don’t want to pay for a name, either. I want decent cabinets that will last awhile. Thanks for your recommendations!

Moving out for Renovation Work?

March 26, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 3 Comments →

LadyMoonlight!! asked:

I finally won my battle with my local Council! Our Victorian terrace is in a bad way and needs extensive repair work and they have agreed to give us a renovation grant to do the work (you see, persistence does pay off with these people!)

Trouble is, as our kitchen and bathroom will have to be totally ripped out (including the roof and floor), we’ve been told we have to move out for 6-8 weeks while thw work is done.

My in-laws live 250 miles away so we can’t stay with them (would be one hell of a daily commute), my mum’s not far away but doesn’t really have the room and none of our friends could put us two, our 15 month old son and our cat up for that long (luckily my mum in law will take our dog in for us! She she could take the cat too I guess . . .)

Council say they might be prepared to find the 3 of us some temp. accommodation but we’d have to pay rent for it, which we can’t do on top of our mortgage.

Anyone else been in this situation? I really don’t know what to do
The Council offer “renovation grants” to houseowners who are on a low income but need renovation work in order to bring the house up to a “Liveable” standard. It is for people who need work done which they cannot finance themselves but would mean they could not continue living in the house without it being done.
My Grain - we can’t get a loan from anywhere due to a terrible credit rating. Not even the highest interest, “bad credit” loans will help us.

How do you remove a newspaper-ad stain from a kitchen cabinet?

March 25, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 4 Comments →

Oyarsa asked:

I had one of those ads that come tucked inside a newspaper in my kitchen cabinet; unfortunately, it apparently became wet and went I went to clean it out today, it stuck to the cabinet (briefly) and left an unsightly newspaper-ad stain.

Please help!
Edit: I have used soapy water. I have used vinegar. Still there.
I have tried baking soda and vinegar.

plumbing question in a small kitchen remodeling project?

March 25, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 5 Comments →

big blue asked:

we want to relocate the sink (to an island which is 3 -4 feet away from it’s original location) … Is’t possible to extend the existing plumbing/pipe without re-routing the plumbing (which would cost more than $10,000 from what I have heard as the basement below is finsihed).

Replacing tiles in bathroom and kitchen?

March 23, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 7 Comments →

Celi asked:

We had renovation in our apartment replacing tiles in bathroom and kitchen. How long does it take usually to replace all of the tiles in these 2 places?

This renovation guy is taking in total of…15 hours in total in 3 days and he’s still not done. I feel this is taking way too long…He didn’t replace all of it by the way…he only did like 3 tiles in kitchen, 15 tiles in bathroom and he replaced a new dry wall underneath these 15 tiles. Plus, these tiles he replaced aren’t even matched with others…I mean, not at all.

He did grout work last night…I have no idea how long this will go on and even I asked, he seems to have no idea either.

I can’t fire him because he is hired by new landlord, current one doesn’t have any power over this so there’s nothing I can do. But I was just wondering how long it usually take?

Thanks in advance!
By the way, he’s not kind of a guy who shows up on time…He told me that he’ll be here at 11:00AM today but it’s already 12:40PM…It’s been like this since last Wednesday. He’s also not kind of a guy to call us 1 hours before he shows up even we asked him to since last Wednesday. He didn’t come here on weekends though…He shows up like at 4 in afternoon often, right after my husband leave. He did that 3 days in a row(Thu, Fri, Mon) and on first day, he told me to clear the kitchen then he said he will be right back in 5 to 10 minutes, he never showed up till next day at 4 in afternoon.

He keeps insisting to do extra work, and I keep insisting him to not to worry…but he changes his tone as soon as my husband leaves. He snaps and yells constantly. I’m frightened of this drastic change…But there’s nothing we can do. At least I want to know how long this usually takes.

Feedback on my poem?

March 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Kitchen 4 Comments →

cricket15 asked:

Here goes:

It’s been eight hours in the car/
mid July and our necks stick to the back of the seats/

cornfields and mustard fields/
I want to crawl out the open window and run across the highway/
leap across the yellow divider and into the tall golden stalks/
press my body against the cool brown earth/

we pull up to a motel/
27 channels/
a squirrel on a tightrope and a kitchen renovation/

the motel pool closed at 8./
it’s 8:12/

there’s a golf course outside our window/
this time, we do crawl out/

sprinklers ticking in semicircles on the bright green grass/
you think you understand it/
and then tztztztz they spin around and spray you/

and we leap over the little knolls/
spin around the red-flagged poles/
our legs free /

a fleeting moment before the sun sinks below the willow trees/
and the hotel manager runs at us like we’re the crazy ones
