Has anyone SUCCESSFULLY gotten rid of the smell of rotten potatoes from a kitchen cabinet?

I Love Yellow asked:

I had a bag of rotten potatoes leak onto my shelf-paper lined cabinet. I changed the shelf paper, but the cabinet itself absorbed the smell, along with all the plasticware I store there. Soaking in vinegar water got most of the smell out of the plastic, but I cannot do anything about the cabinet itself. I’ve heard lots of ideas, but I’m looking for someone who has actually had success. thanks!

Waste Not, Want Not - Kitchen Cabinets and Beyond

Carmen Fontana asked:

Economists are finally admitting that the country is on the verge of a “long and painful recession.” With dire predictions like that, homeowners are scrambling for ways to cut costs. Energy bills are going to prove one of the biggest burdens to cash-strapped homeowners, especially as the winter season looms. And with much of their time and appliance usage taking place in the kitchen, saving energy in that room of the home is a great place for homeowners to start.

The Akron Beacon Journal had just that idea in mind when it ran an article titled “Cut waste, save energy in the kitchen.” Interestingly enough, energy saving can be accomplished in a wide range of ways, from faucets to lighting and even kitchen cabinets. Culling ideas from Consumer Reports’ Shop-Smart, the newspaper reported these ideas for making your kitchen greener:

• “Add an aerator.” This kitchen faucet attachment typically costs less than $10 but can save you a bundle on your water bill by reducing overall water flow.

• “Whittle your watts.” Because it’s often the largest room in the house, the kitchen can be an expensive lighting proposition. There are ways you can cut back on your electric bill, though. Shop-Smart recommends, “Switch to compact fluorescent lights in overhead fixtures, and consider adding LED or fluorescent under-cabinet task lighting.” And if your kitchen cabinets have a valance, you’re in luck. In that case, consider installing inexpensive and energy-efficient track lighting that you can hide behind the valance.

• “Put in a ceiling fan.” Much more cost-effective than air conditioning, it will keep your kitchen cool on a limited budget.

• “Reuse when you renovate.” This piece of advice is particularly amenable to kitchen cabinet remodeling. Consider refacing as opposed to replacing your kitchen cabinets. If buying new is your desire, then look for a kitchen cabinet manufacturer that focuses its resources on sustainability and a commitment to the environment. Certification in the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) will give you peace of mind that the kitchen cabinet manufacturer you’ve chosen takes green approaches seriously. Certification is awarded based on criteria compliance in five categories, all designed to reduce waste, conserve natural resources and maintain a commitment to community involvement.

• “Trade in your energy hogs.” Be on the lookout for energy-efficient appliances. “They may have higher prices upfront, but you’ll recoup the cost through energy savings,” points out Shop-Smart.

It is possible to go green and save money in all rooms of the home, but the kitchen is a particularly good starting point. When evaluating the environmental friendliness of your home, keep the three Rs in mind: reduce, reuse and recycle.

A reputable kitchen cabinet manufacturer will embrace such a philosophy and help you achieve your green goals. The following are just some of the ways in which an eco-friendly kitchen cabinet manufacturer can assist in your environmental endeavors:

• Using only EPP particle board (Environmentally Preferable Product) that includes a percentage of recycled material and no added formaldehyde.

• Recycling returned cabinets

• Recycling and reusing finish material where appropriate and applicable to drastically reduce waste

Choosing The Right Material And Style For Your Kitchen Cabinets

Ahmad Abdullah asked:

Kitchen cabinets are one of the most important furnishing in a kitchen. They decide how the whole kitchen will look like though the kitchen’s size and needs would be the deciding factor in buying suitable kitchen cabinets.Though kitchen cabinets function mostly as storage, they usually take up most of the kitchen space and fill most of your eyesight. Therefore, you would want to avoid choosing what will be an eyesore to watch.

As the main purpose is storage, kitchen cabinets should possess durability to withstand not only the kitchen’s heat and mess but also the act of frequent opening and closing. What material would be best for the cabinets then?

The three main materials used in kitchen cabinet productions are wood, metal and laminate. Laminate kitchen cabinets are made of multiple layers of kraft paper, decorative paper layer and a plastic sealant bonded together under extremely high pressure. They are inexpensive and come in all sorts of colours but have the downside of being chipped and unrepairable.

Metal cabinets made from stainless steel are far better in durability and very easy to clean, costing a lot more than any other materials. The only problem with this material is its nature that makes fingerprints visible on the surface and the disadvantage of getting scratches all over.Nevertheless, stainless steel cabinets are very popular and widely used in modern, contemporary kitchens.

The best material and mostly used in urban and country kitchens would be wood. It has both durability and comes in various colours and finishes. The disadvantage of this material is it might warp over time and expands due to the humidity of the kitchen’s atmosphere. This causes problems especially to stick-prone wooden slide drawers. Fortunately, this problem could be easily avoided by choosing wooden kitchen cabinets with ball-bearing slides or track-roller slides drawers.

If wood is your choice then there’s also a great range of wood to choose from. Whether the inexpensive Birch to easily coloured Alder. Or the currently popular Maple and Mahogany. The highly durable Oak and Hickory would also be a great choice and if you’re not worry about spending on your kitchen cabinets, dark elegant Cherry, Ebony or Walnut wood would be great.

Choosing the right style for your kitchen is also important and kitchen cabinet styles are defined by the doors’ designs. If you love the traditional country style kitchen cabinets then the recessed panel door style is for you where a panel is fitted behind the frame of the cabinet door. If the frame has two divisions than it is no longer country but Mission-like style. There’s a choice of having the doors with cathedral or curved arch on top for this style.

If you’re the simple type and can’t stand too many cluttering patterns or colours, you might like to choose the slab door style that’s smooth and covers the front of the cabinet entirely. Formal kitchens in hotels or big restaurants usually have kitchen cabinets with raised panel doors. They are framed with wood glued on top of the door and might or might not have a decorative edge giving them an elegant look. What will be your choice?

Getting new kitchen cabinets or refacing them consumes money and also time. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the material and style suit your taste and needs, lasting for a long time to worth the investments made for them.

Shopping for Kitchen Cabinets: Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinet for your Price Range

Gary Nealon asked:

Kitchen Cabinets are by and large the core of any kitchen. They can be highlighted by kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator, stove, cooktop, dishwasher and microwave, or these appliances can be modified to blend in by using panels that match your kitchen cabinets.

Shopping for kitchen cabinets can be intimidating, especially for a first time buyer. There are hundreds/thousands of major kitchen cabinet companies, and many more smaller custom kitchen cabinet shops where you can get any cabinet made from any species of wood that your mind can imagine. Add to that list the explosion of RTA Kitchen Cabinet importers, and the laminated cabinet manufacturers, and suddenly the list can be overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that higher price always means high quality in construction, or more features being available.

In the past, pricing had always been the way to categorize kitchen cabinets. Traditionally, tthe higher-quality cabinets simply cost more money. As I mentioned before, with more and more importers conforming to the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) building standards, some of the RTA Kitchen Cabinets or Stock kitchen cabinets can actually be a sturdier cabinet than the traditional, made to order cabinets. Regardless of what type of kitchen cabinet you decide to go with, it does not take much effort to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the actual kitchen cabinets.

Most kitchen cabinet manufacturers build their kitchen base and wall cabinets in standard sizes. The kitchen base cabinets are often 34.5 inches tall and 24 inches deep. They come in widths starting at 12 inches and can go up to 48 inches often in increasing width increments of 3 inches. Kitchen wall cabinets are often 12 inches deep and 30 inches or 42 inches tall. They also come in the same size widths as the base cabinets. Wall cabinets also come in several different heights and depths for locations such as over the refrigerator or over the microwave/hood range unit. With custom kitchen cabinets, you have even more choices available, since the kitchen cabinets will be created specifically for your kitchen space.

Different semi-custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers make different-sized kitchen cabinets for all sorts of special looks and situations. It is not uncommon to have one cabinet extend beyond adjacent cabinets to create a distinguished look. It pays to shop around to see all of the different possibilities and special cabinet features offered by the custom and semi-custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers.

One of the biggest advantages to true custom kitchen cabinets is the ability to make one giant base or wall kitchen cabinet instead of separate boxes that are screwed together by the installer at the jobsite. A custom-cabinet maker can easily make one giant base cabinet 8 feet long that installs as if it were a piece of furniture. The same is true for wall kitchen cabinets. The advantage of this method is the lack of vertical seams where two traditional cabinet boxes would mate up to one another.

Pay particular attention to the materials used to build the kitchen cabinets. Some kitchen cabinets are made with minimal-quality engineered lumber, particleboard, or fiberboard. . If you plan to load a wall cabinet with heavy traditional china, the weight of the dishes may cause the cabinet to pull apart over time. This is particularly true when it comes to the semi-custom cabinets that the name brand cabinet manufacturers sell at the big box stores (which is why price is not always an accurate gauge of cabinet quality). Many of the RTA Kitchen Cabinet manufacturers use solid plywood sides, which obviously creates a strong kitchen cabinet box than a particleboard or fiberboard box. When it comes to custom cabinets, the material choices are endless and can usually be specified by the customer.

Another factor that will determine the price of kitchen cabinets is the material used to hold it together. Custom kitchen cabinet manufacturers will often use a combination of dovetailed joints, wood biscuits, and glue to create tight joints. Mid-grade kitchen cabinets will have a wide range of materials holding them together (staples and nails on the lower end, to cam lock assembly and wood glue on the higher end). Most RTA Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers utilize the cam lock system, which creates a nice sturdy cabinet, and when enhanced with wood glue, can last a life time. Steer away from any kitchen cabinets that are using staples, wooden dowels, or just screws. The strength of the cabinet will be compromised at the joints with these weaker joining materials.

I have been remodeling houses for over 10 years, and have been able to weed out some of the kitchen cabinet choices that didn’t work for me. If you are interested in learning more about my personal preferences, check out my author bio.

Max Info asked:

Cabinets have a variety of usage wherever they are used in kitchen as kitchen cabinets or elsewhere. We do spend a lot of time in our homes and really do need to spend some time in have the appropriate cabins designed for our use.

If you are looking for both a kitchen cabinet and a bathroom cabinet, then you need to know how to locate a bathroom cabinet supplier as well as a kitchen cabinet supplier. If you are building a house or doing a remodeling job, then you know what I mean. It can be frustrating to work when you don’t know where to look for these services and products. Here are some ideas for finding these resources.

Consult a Building Store

One resource for both a kitchen cabinet and a bathroom cabinet is your local building store. They can give you an idea of what types of cabinets that you will need for either a remodeling or building a home.  Most of these building stores can be looked at as both a bathroom cabinet supplier as well as a kitchen cabinet supplier.  These stores will have many different types in stock for immediate purchase and installation in your construction project. Oftentimes they will deliver as well to your site and sometimes will install the product on site.

Talk to Your Local Builder

This is another resource for finding a kitchen cabinet as well as a bathroom cabinet. They will have people that they will send you to that are kitchen cabinet supplier, as well as a bathroom cabinet supplier. By speaking to a builder that you know, you will be able to get information that not many others may have. They may also be able to get you in touch with a kitchen and bathroom designer that can design a bathroom or kitchen and be able to help you with the cabinets that you want in both rooms to match the décor of the room itself.

Look At Specialty Stores

Another resource is specialty stores that cater to the needs of builders. These stores will not only have kitchen cabinet and bathroom cabinet for sale, but they will also have lists of kitchen cabinet supplier as well as bathroom cabinet supplier, if they don’t supply these items themselves.   These types of stores usually cost less than the building supply stores and also offer installation of said cabinets on site. Usually these stores also have a better selection of products than a regular building store for much less than these building stores. So this is another area that you want to look at when looking at cabinetry for the home.

Surf Online

While this may sound preposterous, there are more people looking for both a bathroom cabinet and kitchen cabinet online. By looking online, they can go straight to the bathroom cabinet supplier or a kitchen cabinet supplier and get a healthy discount.

Just run your imagination and get your kitchen cabinets custom designed by the specialists.
