Kitchen cabinet question - where can I find metal kitchen cabinets?

Dboy asked:

A friend lived in an old apartment that had a metal kitchenette that was probably from the ’40s or ’50s. The cabinets were still in great shape and easy to clean. I’d like to find something similar for my kitchen.

Does anyone know where to buy new metal kitchen cabinets - preferably around western PA? I have looked through the other answers, but none of the answers led to a useful site.

worknlakeside asked:

Like to know if anyone has used kitchen cabinets for a bathroom vanity at a finished height of 36″ and had problems with it size in the bathroom. I read another old post that said it was too big for her she was 5′ 2″ and so am I. Said getting close to the mirror was a problem. Anyone done this.
Thank you all for your insite. I was thinking of using kitchen cause months ago I had a design company come out and that is what he suggested using. I got rid of that group for other reasons and this is just another I didn’t know about.

Help! I have a lower kitchen cabinet w/an inset shelf that I want 2 remove. Is the shelf a support 2 the unit?

harleyhon444 asked:

This is a below-counter cabinet. The single shelf is non-adjustable as it has been recessed into grooves on either side of the inside cabinet walls. I was going to cut it out in order to remove it but someone suggested it might be a support to the overall cabinet itself. Does anyone know anything about this? Will my cabinet fall apart if I cut out the shelf?

Quality Kitchen Cabinets

Simon Oldmann asked:

When you are building your dream house, or even just moving into a house, you should think about your kitchen as the main room of the house, in many homes the kitchen is the place that family members meet and communicate with each other, it is almost the only room in the house that can be used for intimate family talks.

Any home improvement task requires that you set your expectation and build a realistic budget for the task at hand, sometimes you want to perform it yourself or with the help of all the family and sometimes you know you will need to call in the experts. In this specific case I recommend that you get an expert if you plan to redesign your kitchen.

As with anything else there is always a question of budget, you will need to think carefully how much money you want to allocate to each room, but if you are thinking of a putting significant change in your house you should think about installing quality kitchen cabinets.

A quality kitchen cabinets will complete your kitchen, hides it faults and assist you in your daily cooking for a long while, you can plan a new kitchen when thinking of kitchen cabinets, changing colors and adding a lot of functionality to the cooking space and the eating area. You can plan a new cooking space in which you will have higher accessibility to your cooking needs, and you can fit the kitchen to your specific cooking style, if you are using the oven a lot you can create a large open space for preparing the dishes, or if you are more a frying chef you could create a comfortable space that is supported by the practical cabinets that hold the tools you need while cooking on fire.

Unlike other home improvement areas, the kitchen should be one you use expert opinion on, you will need a contractor that has the knowledge of electricity and water, one that will be able to give advice regarding humidity and placing of cabinets so you will not find yourself having to go over a whole kitchen remodeling because of damp walls and cabinets. After you talk with a contractor and get the necessary facts about your kitchen needs you should go out and look at different products on the market, the best thing is to walk around kitchen cabinets show rooms and find out what you like best.

The internet is also a good resource for information about kitchen cabinets, and when you will look for kitchen cabinets, if you are looking for a quality product this is also a good way to research the warranty and insurance issues, the bottom line is that you still need to do your research, even when shopping for quality cabinets this market has a lot of different products and you don’t want to find out that someone sweet talked you into buying you didn’t want.

Once you got all the planning and budget issues out of the way the only questions will be the color of the cabinets and how much time it will take for everything to be installed, if you go for quality kitchen cabinets you are almost guaranteed a kitchen that will serve you well for many years.

New Kitchen and Remodeling Mistakes Part Ii: Kitchen Design Blunders That Caused Kitchen Cabinet Nightmares

Craig Parker asked:

In Part I I talked about some different things that will cause headaches during either a new kitchen install or a kitchen remodeling project, as well as some workarounds. Picking up right where I left off…

Spice Racks Hold No Counters

Some people like their spices right next to the stove. Unfortunately, the pull out spice racks made by most manufacturers are designed to sit between two other cabinets. There may be other types of cabinets that will fit in according to the manufacturer’s catalog, but not in practice. Check these out thoroughly before ordering the cabinets. A better option in these cases would be narrow cabinets (6”-9”) for cookie sheet and pan storage next to the stove, and spice racks on the other side of those. Even better would be spice storage in a wall cabinet pullout.

Are the Cabinet Option Ducks In a Row?

What if your kitchen cabinets arrive with regular drawer glides? This is fine, unless you wanted soft-close and full extension undermount glides. It’s a pain to change things afterward, and it costs more, especially if you’ve hired a contractor for the kitchen installation. Make sure everyone is on the same page with these details. Finished sides are another GOTCHA that trips people up on occasion; a cabinet on the end of a run should have a finished side.

If there are two identically dimensioned cabinets in the plan though, be sure to look for finished sides when unpacking them. One may have such a finished side and belongs at the end of a run, while the other cabinet may be intended for sandwiching between two other cabinets. Between looking at the plan, and the labels on the boxes, you should be able to figure out where the cabinets belong.

Are the Walls Plumb?

This is a problem that plagues many older houses, but it can also be present in a poorly built new house. If the walls are leaning in or out, it may cause problems down the line. In such instances, use the NARROWEST measurement and block out cabinets (a bit of finagling with filler strips) that are part of the longer measurements; this should get you through.

Nearly all of the problems outline in both parts of this article are really breakdowns in communication somewhere along the line. If the customer is informed by designers about finishes and options (and this requires the designer to be informed by the manufacturers) heaps of trouble can be avoided. If the customer is clear about what he or she wants, and the designer is receptive, things should go smoothly. If whoever measures is precise and takes imperfect construction into account (it will happen by default if they are precise) then there shouldn’t be any calls to Houston.

Rather than placing blame when there is trouble, remember that there are often workarounds for even the biggest problems; focus on that instead of whose fault it is and you may still have an enjoyable experience.
