Kitchen Cabinet Height?

skinny4481 asked:

I have kitchen cabinets that are 24 inches tall, the wall that I am going to put them on is the wall with the kitchen sink and is about 54 inches tall. I am just wondering what is a good height to have the cabinets above the sink to give enough room and still look good.

Our upper cabinets are 16 1/2″ above the counter top. That is a pretty comfortable height. You might fudge that down an inch or so but do so with care you might need to fit a mixer or other appliance under them. There are no cabinets above the sink or cook top.

Our counter top is 36″ above the floor.

    Minimum 22″ above the sink.

21″ to 22″ is standard space between counter on bottom of basic wall cabinets which allows 8-9″ from top of cabinet to ceiling. Some people prefer the upper blank space to place pictures, decorations, etc…

If you don’t want the extra space and prefer more cupboards, there are narrow cupboards that could be in that area to store the rarely used items and see what space you have remaining between your 24″ cupboards and counter.

The bottom of the kitchen cabinet should be mounted on the wall 54″ from the floor. if all your cabinets are 24″ tall. I personally like the cabinet above the sink to be even with the rest.
