My mother would place a small box in a kitchen cabinet in my new home, does anyone know about this tradition?

She would place salt, bread or cracker crumbs, and a dime in the box and hide it in a kitchen cabinet. When I found it (years later) I ask her what it was. A blessing so we would always have food to eat, enough spice to keep life interesting, and money in our pockets. I know my grandmother also did this when my parents moved to a new home. My grandmother was from Germany so I’m guessing it is a German Blessing. Ihaven’t been able to find anything and would love to know if anyone knows about this. Thanks

How interesting! I have never heard of this, but it is a quaint little tradition.

The custom you described sounds a lot like the old shamanistic Wicca ritual to protect a dwelling, often carried over to Christian culture without the participants knowledge of why they were doing what they were doing, just done because it was always done; or lost origins to time. I of course mean no disrespect to your Oma, and I personally find it charming that She loved you so. Thank you for sharing this interesting finding.
