#2 a plan
#3 bring in a contractor to tell you if your budget and plan are doable and let him get started if so
you could try to do it yourself with subcontractors, but if you can afford it, use a general contractor to save lots of time, aggravation, and money (from oversights)

Select the Cabinets and Counter tops you want,then get 3 bids on the work and check References- Measure your wall area from corner to corner, and along any wall that will have Cabinets- draw a sketch of this- take it to Home Depot or Lowes- they can help you get an idea of the cost.
Both may send someone out to do the Layout for you- from that layout people can bid the work- both also have people on file who do this work. Unless-
If you thinking Cabinet maker- thats another story.

As long as you are not moving walls of anything, the cabinet company will usually install your cabinets for you. First you need a plan, go shopping and figure out what you want and what you want to spend. Most companies will sit down with you and come up with a free estimate if you go in with the measurements of the space that you are planning. Most cabinets will take at least a few weeks (depending where you get them) to come in. Are you changing flooring? Painting walls? this should be done first. New appliances? You will need measurements for the cabinets they go into. A lot to think about, Find out what cabinet company you are going to work with and go from there I think.

If you are going to use a contractor, then your first step is to get 3 or 4 of them out there to bid the job. They will take measurements and discuss various options with you, then get back to you with a proposal. Your next step would be choosing a contractor based on those proposals. A good rule of thumb is to go middle of the road. Don’t choose the highest guy and don’t choose the lowest guy. And make sure the scheduling works for you and that you get a time table in writing, and cost over-runs must be approved by you beforehand.
After you choose a contractor, the rest of the steps (permits, demo, etc.) are up to him. You don’t have to make all decisions beforehand. The proposal will usually have budgets alloted for various things (cabinets, fixtures, tile, etc.) and you can shop and choose within those budgets while construction is started.
