Go to HGTV.com — what a wealth of information and tips!

I won’t start a renovation without a visit to my local salvage yard and demolition company….I’ve picked up quarter-sawn oak flooring, granite counter tops, maple cabinets, sinks, and a wealth of other items that are near-new to new, as well as unique items unavailable elseplace.

Price is going to be relative to your materials, who installs, and so on. However, I always get my base price by going to Home Depot or Lowe’s…then head over to the salvage yard or demo company and shop around to see if I can get a better one (generally do).

Basically, unless the price is just too good to pass up, don’t do more than your home in your area merits…in other words, if everyone else in your area has formica counter tops, granite is probably over the top and will not give you a good return on investment.

Think in terms of what works for you and your family NOW, and what would work for a buyer in the future. As an example, if you have kids, granite countertops may not be wise, as if a hot pan is laid directly on them they can crack (yeah, they don’t tell you that at the granite store). Tiles on floors are always a good option, but again, if your floors aren’t perfectly level you may need leveling as well as underboard. Wood floors in a kitchen often look nice, but are seriously impractical. Linoleum is actually a natural, green product, and is easily replaced.

So, as you can see, you need to assess your lifestyle, needs, possible return on investment…then get thee over to HGTV.com.
