What are the best selections for remodeling/decorating a small bathroom, specifically, best colors/patterns?

I have always loved the black and white checkered floor look but I dont know if it will work in a small space. For couple of years ago and am sorry now even though it is creme or soft beige which looks good for couple of years now im in earthy.
